A lot of the work you will do on your lathe is going to be 8" or less. This leaves a spot on the end of your bed to store some of the tools you use most frequently. I made mine so I could lift it off easily when it got in the way. Use your own imagination here on what you want to store. You could use just about any material. I made mine out off some scrap melamine faced particle board. For some unknown reason, when I turn a piece of scrap into something useful, I like it even better. After 14 years of use, it's still running.

It's a good idea to leave yourself reminders that can save you some time and material down the road. I use a piece of tape and scratch a little note on it to "remind me" of something that's out of the ordinary. Doesn't take a lot of time to do it and can save a lot in the future. I like to write material compositions several places for future reference.
